Nutritional and Integrative Medicine for Mental Health
My interest in nutrition sparked when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition in 2016. I had a friend who had dealt with something similar and she eliminated much of pain in changes in her diet. I was immediately interested and asked my first rheumatologist about trying some dietary changes. He scoffed and said that what I eat didn’t matter. That comment sent me on a journey to learn about nutrition and its role in our wellbeing. A decade prior to this, my mental health was a mess. I had multiple hospitalizations and could have filled a paper with psychotropic medicines I was on. When I took out gluten, I noticed a huge improvement in mood. As I implemented more changes, I saw a stabilizing; I stopped having the wild swing of emotions. I have noticed that often autoimmune conditions and mental health challenges go hand in hand. While one is not necessarily a predictor for the other, I’ve noticed it is common for them to both be present. The good news is that dietary changes that help calm autoimmune flares are the same ones that can help benefit mood and emotions.
I want my consultations to feel as though you are sitting down to have tea or coffee with a friend. I want to work with you on what you are ready to change. I have taught high school for fifteen years, and I consider myself to be pretty patient. I bring that patience when working with a client: I’m not in a hurry. Dietary changes are hard, and it’s okay for it take awhile. The most important thing is for you to be on board with making incremental changes. I’m grateful to go on this journey with you!
